Considerations For The Sex Offender Registry

Here is sure one very sensitive subject for everyone. The Colorado Sex Offender Registry is probably the very best source of up to date information. There are also several mobile phone apps available now too. You can simply enter a zip code, address or even a city name to see a map of where the registered sex offenders live. Other such sites are Family Watchdog and the U.S. Department of Justice's National Site - Offender Public Website Both of these sites are also free. Offender Locator app, one of the more popular i-phone sites cost $1.99.

The first word of caution is that all of the lists publically available rely on the released offender complying with the law that requires them to notify local police departments of where they move to. Colorado currently has nearly 1,100 who did not bother to registure. Others who did notify the authorities of their address and then fail to notify the authorities when they moved again; causing the current posting of their location to be incorrect.

The next point of interest is that although the number of registered sex offenders has exploded over the past several years, it does not mean there are more such crimes being committed. Better record keeping and the type of crimes that now require a person to be listed has changed. Crimes such as urinating in public, streaking, visiting a prostitute or under aged teens who get caught having consensual sex with their under aged partner can all , depending on the state laws, require the person to be registered as a sex offender.

So, don't assume a neighborhood that has one of the dots on the map is accurate. It may not be. And, neighborhoods with no dots may have sex offenders living there. It would also be a good idea to review the type of crime the individual committed before making any conclusions about living in the neighborhood.

Perhaps the best part of these sites is that it they are a beginning point for you to do further in depth research and to ask additional questions.

I really think that the Sex Offender Registry gives people a false sense of security. The website for Denver even says "THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LISTING OF ALL REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS RESIDING IN THE CITY AND COUNTY OF DENVER." (http://www.denvergov.org/DenverMaps/report.asp?rpt=dsclm&cat=csafe)
